The Missouri Valley

In my opinion, the Missouri Valley has a couple of advantages over all the other conferences.  The first is the age of the conference.  Because the MVC is the second oldest conference in college basketball it has a larger group of players to draw from.

Second, the list of schools that have been in the MVC is huge.  They can draw on talent from schools not normally thought of as a MVC schools.

The Missouri Valley was established in 1907.  Its current members are: Bradley University, Creighton University, Drake University, University of Evansville, Illinois State University, Indiana State University, Missouri State University, University of Northern Iowa, Southern Illinois, and Wichita State University.

Former members (and get ready, this is a long list): Butler University, University of Cincinnati, University of Detroit, Grinnell College, University of Houston, University of Iowa, Iowa State, Kansas, Kansas State, Univ. of Louisville, Memphis State University, Univ. of Missouri, Univ. of Nebraska, New Mexico State, North Texas State, Univ. of Oklahoma, Oklahoma A & M, St. Louis, University of Tulsa, Washburn University, Washington University in St. Louis, and West Texas State.

  1. Xavier McDaniel (Wichita St.) 6’ 7” / 18.4 ppg / 11.6 rpg / 1.7 apg / 1.0 spg / .9 blpg / 33.5% 3-point / 3x all conference selection / 2x POY / 3x All American / Consensus All American

  1. Ed Macauley (St. Louis) 6’ 8” / 13.6 ppg / 12.4 rpg / .9 apg / 1.0 spg / 1.9 blpg / 30.2% 3-point / 4x all conference selection / 2x consensus All American / Helms POY / AP POY (This award has caused me some problems in trying to confirm that Ed did in fact win it.  According to several sites the AP award was created in 1961 and Jerry Lucas of Ohio State was the first winner.  When I did my research for Ed Macauley three different websites listed Ed as the Player of the Year as listed by the AP.  I have decided to go with it thinking that it was an unofficial declaration)

  1. Paul Hogue (Cincinnati) 6’ 9” / 15.3 ppg / 12.0 rpg / .9 apg / 1.0 spg / 1.9 blpg / 30.2% 3-point / 3x all conference selection / 2x All American / Final Four MVP / Helms POY

  1. Bob Kurland (Oklahoma A&M) 6’ 11” / 14.1 ppg / 11.2 rpg / .9 apg / 1.0 spg / 1.9 blpg / 30.2% 3-point / 3x all conference selection * / 3x Consensus All American / 2x Final Four MVP / Sporting News POY / Helms POY  / Information about Bob Kurland’s height is in question.  Oklahoma State lists Bob as a seven-foot center.  Yet, once again, other basketball reference locations say that Bob was six foot ten inches tall.  I am splitting the difference for this book.
